As the “baby boomer” generation ages, and the population overall is tending to live longer, there appears to be an increasing awareness of the prevalence of cognitive disorders in our society. Dementia is a general term that represents a decline in mental ability that is severe enough to interfere with daily life. Providing caregiver services to persons with dementia can be challenging. The purpose of this training is to introduce the disease of dementia as a physical phenomenon, consider the behaviors exhibited, and assess how to successfully honor and manage problematic behavior (communication).

Objectives

  • Incorporate an understanding of the physiological underpinnings of dementia.
  • Recognize the overarching significance that “behavior = communication.”
  • Consider alternative methods to address problematic behaviors.
