Gov. Scott Walker signed into law a bill Monday that creates standards around the practice of community paramedicine.

The law establishes criteria and guidelines for the Department of Health Services to approve community paramedics, community emergency medical services technicians and community EMS providers.

It also creates a framework that allows healthcare providers and EMS providers to collaborate on providing non-emergency care.

The legislation had bipartisan support and backing from EMS providers, firefighters and others.

“The future of healthcare is to be proactive instead of reactive,” Greenfield Fire Chief Jon Cohn, president of the Wisconsin Fire Chiefs Association, said in a statement.
