Conference Keynote Spotlight: Shane Melenbacker, "Leadership Traits to Live By"

Thursday, June 7, 9:00 - 10:00 a.m

Everyone has the ability to influence, therefore everyone is a leader. Since the early 50's the Marine Corp has been using 14 leadership traits to influence Marines to become leaders and the same traits that men and women have died for on the battlefield are just as useful to live for in our offices and life. Shane will combine his experience as a Marine and Healthcare Administrator when presenting 14 leadership traits to live by.

"Leadership is intangible, hard to measure, and difficult to describe. Its quality would seem to stem from many factors. But certainly they must include a measure of inherent ability to control and direct, self-confidence based on expert knowledge, initiative, loyalty, pride and sense of responsibility. Inherent ability cannot be instilled, but that which is latent or dormant can be developed. Other ingredients can be acquired. They are not easily learned. But leaders can be and are made." -General C. B. Cates, 19th Commandant of the Marine Corps

Don't worry, this won't be a military history lesson and although Shane will use some battlefield comparisons, this is about the office and how in today's work environment, and dare I say family environment, it is vitally important that leaders actually lead!

There has been a lot of talk about generational differences, from Baby Boomers to Millennials, and although how we interact and communicate with each of these generations may be different, what they desire to see in a leader remains consistent! So, without further ado, let's discuss JJ DID TIE BUCKLE (acronym for Justice, Judgement, Decisiveness, Integrity, Dependability, Tact, Initiative, Endurance, Bearing,Unselfishness, Courage, Knowledge, Loyalty, and Enthusiasm).

Attendees of this session will:

  • Learn and understand what the acronym JJ DID TIE BUCKLE stands for
  • Personally identify what traits come more naturally to others and learn to manage the ones that are not natural.
  • Identify leadership traits in hose around you in order to learn who may be a good candidate for promotion.

About the Speaker:
